Facebook officially introduced the Personalized Social Search Engine called Graph Search. This Graph Search is introduced on 15th January 2013 by CEO Mark Zuckerberg at a press event at the company’s new campus.
Facebook Graph Search is not a Web search engine. Mark Zuckerberg said that this is the third pillars of facebook where first and second are the News Feed and Timeline. Zuckerberg clearly explained the differences between Facebook Graph Search and the services provided by Google and Bing.
This Graph Search is completely built on Facebook’s Social Graph database which is used to make users network useful as tools to find Places which they have visited, Photo’s Shared, friends around a locations, restaurants recommended and many more. Here Graph is a big database which contains 1 billion people, 240 billion photos and 1 trillion Connections.
Here is an example where Zuckerberg tested with his own queries like People who like cycling and are from my home town, Restaurants in London my friends have been to, Photos of My friends, Photos i like, Photos before 1990, Music my friends like, Cities my family visited and etc.
In simple words Graph Search is a database where you can search it according to your query. Facebook stated that this is the new way to help users to make new connection with people. Zuckerberg said that it may take many years to index the whole social database.
Coming to point of privacy Zuckerberg stated that they are taking user privacy seriously with Graph Search. And he said that every searchable content with this new service has its own audience and it can only be searched which is been shared with a user.
This Graph Search included in developing it for mobile platforms, and they are making it available in multiple languages. Graph search is available in “limited beta” version where you can Sign up and find out when you can start using Graph Search.
