On the Outside: Best External Hard Drives on the Market

Cast your mind back a few years ago and external drives were a pricey little number for that extra storage. Fast forward to the present day and you can back up your files on these storage drives for a considerable amount less. Not only that, the quality of external hard drives has come a long way too and you can get more storage space. Here’s a selection of some of the best on the market at the moment so that you don’t have to invest in a single floppy disk more:

Best External Hard Drives on the Market
Toshiba 320GB Portable External Hard drive

The 320GB 2.5-inch notebook-class portable drive is also known as the Toshiba USB 2.0 Portable. Given its massive amount of storage capacity, the drive is able to give you roughly 1 GB for every 22 cents. The rotation rate is 5,400 RPM; it has plug-and-play operation and backup software included. It is 5 x 3.19 x 0.65 inches, BUS powered and only weighs 0.37 lbs. This is the lightest of all the external drives discussed here, which also makes it the most portable.

Hitachi LifeStudio Mobile Plus

This device offers 320GB of memory. At today’s prices, this means that you’re receiving 1GB for approximately just 41 cents. Backup software is available and it will auto-backup for you. It is BUS powered and weighs 0.9 lbs. Its dimensions are 3.17 x 3.35 x 5.35 inches

LaCie Quadra

Featuring a gargantuan 1,000GB, this external drive has a healthy interface transfer rate of 480 Mbps. The trade-off is that it has an external power source. It weighs 3.31 lbs, which is pretty heavy compared to the larger Apple version, and its dimensions are 6.81 x 6.3 x 1.73 inches. This is the fastest external drive on the list as it runs at 7,200 RPM. The speed is fast, but the extra weight and external power source make it less portable than some of the other drives on the list.

Apple Time Capsule

The Apple hard drive comes in at the most expensive on this list, but for the money you pay you get 2,048GB of memory, which is 15 cents per GB. It is BUS powered and comes with multiple device connectors. Its dimensions are 7.7 x 7.7 x 1.4 inches, and unsurprisingly it is the heaviest on this article at 3.5 lbs. This is a massive amount of memory, but as with a lot of Apple products, it doesn’t come cheap.

Patriot Gauntlet 320 Portable Wireless

It has multiple device connections and comes with plug-and-play operation. You get 320GB, which means you pay roughly 50 cents per GB. It works by an external power source, and weighs around 0.4 lb. Its dimensions are 3.39 x 5.47 x 0.96 inches.

The above devices offer some serious storage. It’s time to put away the CDs and the DVDs and use the storage of the future, if you aren’t already there.
